Another reason to homeschool…

There’s a job crisis in Southern California. Teachers from North County San Diego are getting laid off (the government spends 35,000 + per inmate verses $4,500-$9,000 per student crazy lack of balance) and it’s the schools and students, and ultimately the economy will suffer even more.

Homeschooling doesn’t throw our life into a tumble when things like this happen, we get to merrily go on our way. On the news families were saying that they might have to move. The less teachers the larger the classes, and that’s not what any families want.

  1. Hi I hope this goes through..I do not have a blog…but I am an eclectic homeschooling Mama. I have a special needs little boy. My DH has had career opportunity in California and any career move comes down to if it is HS’ing friendly.

I have recently heard that California Illegalized HS’ing..rendering thousands of HS’ers truant. Then I heard they over-ruled it…then I heard they did only for a short while to finish out the school year. Then I heard they didn’t.

Can you tell me what the deal is with Ca.? Is it still legal to HS? Is it legal to Unschool (eclectic HS’ing where the parent determines what is in the best interest of the child / their level of capability) or are Californians obligated to follow school district curriculum?

After turning down many California opportunities….because the HS’ing situation seemed too chance-y…I would like to hear something more definite.

    Thanks in advance!

    Tee

  2. Hi, you’re lucky to get through to me. I haven’t been on my blog in a long while, I seemed to trade it in for facebook. As far as I know it’s still legal. Tho’ I just moved to my home country, Australia 3 months ago, so I could be out of the loop. There was the big Homeschooling trial about a year ago I think it was and even the governor came to speak out for homeschooling, saying that the homeschoolers are safe from being illegal. The way to legally homeschool is to sign up as a private school. It’s easy and if you get a visit from anyone just show them the receipt that you should have printed out and ready. And they can’t say anything. There are a few websites devoted to if you get a visit, signing up as a private school, the answers to write to make it proper, etc.. I have your email address, I can email you links as soon as my internet gets going. Unschooling isn’t even an issue, I just keep my portfolios updated in case, so that there’s no doubt that learning is happening, lots of photos and sample worksheets, art etc.. Also a log of the learning everyday. It’s not something you have to do, but if your concerned, better safe than sorry. My internet isn’t working very well, so getting onto the HSLDA website isnt working, but you should ask them, look on their website, if something big is happening they’d know. Good Luck.
